Welcome to an exciting journey with Dark Matter X, where innovation meets automotive engineering. Today, we’re delving into an entirely new adjustable shifter assembly created by Eric for the 2010 Subaru WRX STI. We’ll uncover the process behind this remarkable creation and take it for a spin!
Meet Eric from Dark Matter X
We’re joined by Eric, the mastermind behind Dark Matter X, a five-year veteran in the automotive world. He embarked on this project while on his way out the door, leading to the development of a groundbreaking product. Eric’s journey takes us from the stock assembly to the first working prototype, followed by a partially CNC-machined and 3D-printed prototype for everyday use. The final product is a metal masterpiece.
What Inspired This Project?
Eric’s passion for identifying problems and creating solutions drove him to venture into 3D printing. When modifying one of his Subarus, he found the need for a better shifter, one that wasn’t readily available in the market. The result was a shifter assembly designed for customization, allowing Subaru drivers to tailor it to their preferences. No more one-size-fits-all solutions.
What Sets This Shifter Apart?
Eric’s creation offers an array of features that go beyond the capabilities of a stock shifter. You can adjust the shift knob’s height without any tools, thanks to a leather boot collar. This feature enables you to fine-tune your shifter’s height, throw, and leverage, providing a personalized driving experience.
The assembly also includes a direct connection to the transmission, independently adjusting the throw of the shifter. No more buying separate short throw shifters or extenders; this shifter does it all in one part.
From Prototype to Production
What’s remarkable is that these prototypes are just the beginning. Eric’s plan is to make these available for sale. Currently, a hundred pre-orders are available. The advantages of 3D printing are evident here. While waiting for a356 T6 aluminum castings, these 3D-printed prototypes have proven to be incredibly durable. They’ve endured thousands of miles without any strength issues. This speaks to the power of 3D printing in rapid prototyping and product development.
The 3D Printing Journey
Eric’s 3D printing journey began with a Creality Ender 3 Pro but soon expanded to an Ultimaker S3 to meet the demands of his project. With meticulous attention to detail and the help of tools like filament drying kits, Eric achieved the best possible layer adhesion and strength for his parts. Drying kits, vacuum chambers, and quality filament make all the difference in 3D printing.
Experience the Difference
The Dark Matter X shifter assembly is a testament to what’s possible through functional 3D printing. It’s a story of turning an idea into reality, driven by motivation and a willingness to learn. As Eric has shown, with determination and the right tools, anyone can create groundbreaking solutions.
