Today, we’re diving into the intricate process of 3D scanning a downpipe section from a Ferrari SF90, the latest hybrid model from Ferrari that boasts close to a thousand horsepower.
The Challenge: Building a Custom Exhaust System
Now, you might wonder, what’s the challenge here? The SF90 is already a powerhouse. Well, for this project, the customer wanted to take things up a notch. They approached Bowden Auto Haas to create a custom straight pipe exhaust system that not only unleashes even more power but also produces spectacular fire displays. To make this possible, we need to start with the downpipe section, which will serve as the foundation for the custom exhaust system.
The 3D Scanning Solution
3D scanning plays a crucial role in this project. It’s the initial step in reproducing the downpipe section accurately, ensuring it fits perfectly with the custom exhaust system. For this specific task, we’re using the Einscan HX, a high-quality 3D scanner that excels in handling reflective surfaces and dark-colored parts. It’s an excellent choice for this job, given the complex and reflective nature of the downpipe.
Using the Einscan HX
Rob, one of our experts, demonstrates how to use the Einscan HX for this 3D scanning process. Here are the key steps he follows:
- Setting Up the Software: The first step is to open the Einscan HX software, ensuring that you have the right settings for your project.
- Selecting Scan Parameters: Choose the scan parameters that suit your project. In this case, we use high detail with a 0.2-millimeter point distance, as it’s ideal for the downpipe section.
- Choosing the Scan Mode: Select reflective mode for handling the challenging reflective surface of the downpipe.
- Applying Markers: To assist the scanner in tracking the object, markers are placed on the part. These markers are essential for ensuring accurate scanning results.
- Scanning the Object: With everything set up, start the scanning process. The Einscan HX’s blue lasers do an impressive job of scanning the reflective surface without the need for scanning sprays.
- Data Cleanup: After the initial scan, it’s essential to clean up any extra data points and ensure that there are no gaps or irregularities in the scan.
- Adjustments and Additional Scanning: In case some parts are not adequately scanned, you can make adjustments and perform additional scans as needed to ensure a complete and accurate scan.
Creating the 3D Model
Once the scanning is complete, you’re left with a point cloud or mesh of the object. This data is taken into software like Geomagic Essentials, where you can work on it further. Geomagic Essentials allows you to refine the mesh, manipulate it, and prepare it for your CAD software.
Keep in mind that software like Geomagic Essentials is crucial for handling large meshes and complex surfaces, as it can handle millions of points without a hitch. This step is crucial to ensure that the 3D model is clean and ready for further design work.
