Welcome to another exciting edition of Vision Miner’s 3D Printing News. We’ve got a lot to cover today, from Desktop Metal’s Studio System 2.0 to super high-speed 3D printing and even 3D-printed chocolates for Valentine’s Day. Let’s dive right in!
Question of the Week
But before we get started, let’s hear from you. What tests do you want us to perform on the 3D printing filaments we carry? We’re releasing videos on all our filaments and need your input. Leave your suggestions in the comments below, and don’t forget to subscribe and check out our new material videos.
Desktop Metal’s Studio System 2.0
Desktop Metal has launched its new Studio System 2.0, an office-friendly 3D printer designed for low-volume prototyping and custom production. This system uses a proprietary bound metal deposition process, making it a unique and compact solution for metal 3D printing. The new two-step process streamlines the printing and sintering stages, reducing the overall system footprint and eliminating the need for solvents in the de-binding process. Worldwide shipments will begin in the first quarter of 2021, and it’s available as an upgrade for existing Studio System customers.
Super High-Speed 3D Printing
Researchers in Illinois have achieved a remarkable breakthrough in 3D printing speed. They’ve combined photopolymerization with a six-axis robotic arm to create a system capable of printing up to 2,000 layers per minute. Unlike traditional 3D printers, this system doesn’t need to stop or restart between layers, leading to faster curing times and high-resolution features. This technology has significant implications for various industries, so stay tuned.
NASA’s 3D Printing Endeavors
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is making use of Markforged 3D printers to support their CoSTAR robots in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge. The team behind CoSTAR, consisting of engineers from NASA, Caltech, and more, turned to 3D printing for producing extra components quickly. Surprisingly, 3D printed brackets and mounts outperformed their aluminum counterparts, demonstrating the reliability and strength of 3D-printed parts. Markforged’s printers and continuous carbon fiber materials have played a pivotal role in this venture, showcasing the potential of carbon fiber-reinforced parts in real-world applications.
Customized Sneaker Fit with 3D Scans
Neats, a US-based startup, is revolutionizing sneaker shopping by offering an AI-powered solution for a personalized fit. Using the iPhone’s depth-sensing Face ID technology, Neats asks users about their sneaker fit preferences and guides them through a 3D scan of their feet. This scan results in a fit prediction for a variety of sneaker brands, helping users choose the perfect pair. A great way to combine technology and fashion!
Rapid TCT & FABTECH in 2021
The Rapid TCT additive manufacturing show has been rescheduled to September 13-15, 2021, at McCormick Place in Chicago. This event, North America’s largest 3D printing trade show, will be co-located with FABTECH 2021, the largest metal forming, fabricating, welding, and finishing event. It’s a must-attend for anyone interested in 3D printing technology.
3D-Printed Chocolates for Valentine’s Day
Sugar Labs is offering a delightful Valentine’s collection featuring 3D-printed chocolates. While it might be too late for this Valentine’s Day, these chocolates are a fantastic gift for your loved one, especially if they’re a bit nerdy. From strawberry-covered chocolate truffles to ’80s and ’90s throwback bonbons, there’s something for every chocolate lover. Who could say no to a box of 3D-printed chocolates?
Department of Defense’s Additive Manufacturing Strategy
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has unveiled its first comprehensive additive manufacturing strategy. The DoD recognizes the potential of 3D printing to enhance supply chain agility and technological dominance. The strategy aims to streamline and consolidate the use of 3D printing within the nation’s defense programs, reducing the risk of obsolete hardware over time.
