Welcome to the latest edition of Vision Miner’s 3D Printing News. We have some exciting developments to share in the world of additive manufacturing. From acquisitions and IPOs to new materials and remarkable projects, there’s a lot happening. Let’s dive right in!

3D Hubs Acquired by Proto Labs

In a significant move, 3D Hubs has been acquired by Proto Labs for $320 million. This acquisition involves $130 million in cash and $150 million in stock, with a possible additional $50 million. Despite the acquisition, 3D Hubs will continue to operate as a separate brand under Proto Labs. This strategic move is expected to provide unprecedented manufacturing flexibility to customers, combining the strengths of both companies.

Massivit 3D’s IPO

Israeli large-format 3D printing company, Massivit 3D, is set to go public on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange with a valuation of $200 million. This IPO aims to raise $50 million in funding, allowing the company to expand further. Massivit 3D has been a pioneer in large-format 3D printing, catering to engineering and architectural markets by offering rapid and cost-effective solutions.

Reshoring in Manufacturing

The call for reshoring manufacturing operations has grown louder in recent years, with various factors such as trade wars, tariffs, and supply chain transparency influencing this shift. Major companies like GE and Apple have been leading the charge in bringing manufacturing back home. A white paper titled “Reshoring Prototyping and Production” by the Empire Group provides insights into mitigating risks and avoiding disruptions in the reshoring process.

3D-Printed Cameras by Dora Goodman

Dora Goodman, a Budapest-based company, is gaining attention for its open-source 3D-printed camera project. The company’s mission is to provide accessible and personalized solutions for analog photography. Goodman’s journey started with wooden camera designs and evolved into a full-fledged venture dedicated to creating unique 3D-printed cameras. This project is a fantastic example of marrying technology and traditional photography.

Nano’s ZetaMix H13 Filament

Nano is introducing the ZetaMix H13 filament, an addition to its ZetaMix line. H13 is a high-temperature-resistant steel known for its strength and ability to withstand extreme temperatures without compromising structural integrity. This material is compatible with most FFF or FDM 3D printers and only requires a one-step thermo post-processing in a tubular furnace to achieve a density of over 90%. It’s an exciting option for high-performance applications.

Blackstone’s 3D-Printed Solid-State Batteries

Swiss company Blackstone Resources has made significant progress in 3D printing lithium-ion solid-state batteries. This innovation offers several advantages over traditional battery cell designs, including lower costs, higher production flexibility, and a 20% increase in energy density. Notably, this technology aligns with Tesla’s vision for the future of battery technology, where solid-state batteries will play a key role.

3D-Printed Car Kits by 1016 Industries

1016 Industries is gearing up to launch its aftermarket full-body 3D-printed car kit in 2021. This project explores the use of state-of-the-art 3D printing technology for car manufacturing, with a prototype based on a McLaren 720S. While the material and technology are still being tested, it’s an exciting venture into the possibilities of 3D printing in the automotive industry. The goal is to seamlessly integrate 3D printing into scaled manufacturing processes.

Middle Schoolers 3D-Printing for the International Space Station

Students from Dade County Middle School in Georgia are using their school’s FDM 3D printer to produce flight-ready components for the International Space Station. This initiative, part of NASA’s HUNCH program, empowers STEM students and exposes them to modern manufacturing technologies. It’s a great example of how 3D printing is making its way into educational programs and real-world applications.
