Hey there, fellow 3D printing enthusiasts! Today, we’re diving into a crucial aspect of 3D printer maintenance – cleaning and lubrication. Whether you own a Funmatte HT or any 3D printer, this is something you should do regularly to ensure top-notch print quality and prevent issues. We’ll guide you through the process step by step, so let’s get started!
Why Cleaning and Lubrication Matter
If you’ve noticed print imperfections, ribbing, or strange anomalies on your prints, it might be time to clean and lubricate your 3D printer. Neglecting this maintenance can lead to friction and wear on critical components, affecting the quality of your prints.
Tools You’ll Need
Before we begin, gather these essential tools:
- Microfiber towels
- Nitrile gloves
- 99.9% isopropyl alcohol
- High-temperature grease
- 2.5mm hex wrench
Step 1: Access the Gantry
Start by moving the extruder out of the way to access the gantry. This provides better access to the shroud on each side of the machine. Using the 2.5mm hex wrench, slightly loosen but don’t remove the four bolts on each side of the shroud. Do this for all sides to make it easier to remove the shroud.
Step 2: Remove the Shroud
Once the bolts are loosened, gently slide the shroud up and remove it. Leave the bolts in place for easy reassembly. You’ll reveal the area that needs cleaning and lubrication.
Step 3: Clean with Isopropyl Alcohol
Take your 99.9% isopropyl alcohol and thoroughly clean the exposed components. Wipe down the rods, bearings, and any surfaces where friction occurs. Repeat this process for all sides and directions, ensuring you get into all the nooks and crannies.
Step 4: Apply High-Temperature Grease
Now, it’s time to lubricate. Use the high-temperature grease provided or a suitable alternative (white lithium grease without Teflon works well). You can use your fingers to apply a thin layer to the rods. Be cautious not to apply too much as it can create excess buildup. Ensure even coverage.
Step 5: Address the Center Gantry
For the center gantry, you can use a microfiber towel sprayed with alcohol to clean, ensuring you reach all areas. Wipe down the surfaces to remove any dirt or residue. Dry it thoroughly after cleaning.
Pro Tip: Regularity Matters
How often you perform this maintenance depends on your environment. In a dusty space, it might be necessary weekly, while in a cleanroom, it could be extended to several months. As a general rule, schedule this task for once a month to maintain optimal 3D printing results.
By following these steps, you’ll ensure smoother printing and better-quality output. This simple maintenance routine can resolve many issues and should be a part of your regular 3D printer care.
